Tips for Staying Safe on the Job During the Summer Months

Categories

Workplace safety is important each and every day, but summer months bring about seasonal safety concerns that you need to be aware of to stay healthy and productive.

Extreme heat is the cause of thousands of workplace deaths each year and workers must be aware of the temperature change to stay safe and healthy. Fortunately, there are a few ways to make summer safety at the workplace easy.

3 Tips to Stay Safe on the Job During Summer Months

It’s important that you do everything you can to mitigate the harsh effects of sizzling summer temperatures so you stay safe during your work hours.

1. Create a Comfortable Environment

If you work indoors, you are still susceptible to the dangers of summer heat. Work with your managers to be sure your facility and work area has an efficient HVAC system that can keep everyone cool during the workday. Even if you work outdoors, you need a cool place to retreat to regulate your body temperature and take a break. You can also look at bringing portable fans to your work or break area, or even buy a personal mister.

2. Make Hydration Effortless

Proper hydration is crucial to regulating your body temperature and staying safe during hot summer days. If your workplace doesn’t already have water coolers or fountains, discuss it with your manager. Also, be sure to pack cold bottles of water if you will not have access to these hydration stations for long periods of time. As a guide, a worker should drink at least one liter of water an hour if they are staying active in the summer heat.

3. Take Regular Breaks

Do the best you can to get the bulk of your work done outside of the hottest time of the day. If this doesn’t work for your shift, be sure to take regular short breaks to stay hydrated and cool down before getting back to work.
